All Hitches
Everyone runs to the sticks and stops. No breaks, no reads, nothing to time.
- The offense1 / 3
The look
Every receiver to the sticks and stopped. No crossing, no breaks to time, nothing that has to be co-ordinated. The ball is out on the third step.
- vs Man2 / 3
The conflict
Playing off means every hitch is open; playing tight means every hitch is contested but everything behind it is a race.
- vs Man3 / 3
The throw
How far off the defenders are lined up. Cushion is the whole call. If they are giving five yards, take five yards.
Why it works
It takes exactly what the cushion offers
If defenders are lined up eight yards off, a five-yard hitch is uncontested. You are not beating anybody, you are accepting what is being given.
Nothing gets the ball out faster
Three steps and throw. No concept on this page beats pressure more quickly, which makes it the call when the rush has been winning.
It teaches spacing before it teaches football
One landmark, one job, one turn. It is the first thing a brand new team can run correctly, and it is worth running for that alone.
How it gets run badly
Running it against tight coverage
A hitch thrown into a defender is a turnover, not an incompletion. Cushion first. With none, this is the wrong call and it should be checked.
Drifting back after the turn
Stop and stay stopped. A receiver who floats back toward the quarterback gives away the yards the route was run for.
Calling it twice in a row
It works because it is unexpected. The second time, the corner is already sitting on the turn and reading the quarterback.
