Four Verticals
Four receivers running straight, spaced so no deep defender can cover two of them.
- The offense1 / 3
The look
Four receivers running straight up the field, evenly spaced across it. The two outside take the sidelines; the two inside aim for the grass between the hashes rather than straight ahead.
- vs Man2 / 3
The conflict
Four one-on-one races with no help. The concept is doing nothing — whoever is losing his matchup is the throw.
- vs Man3 / 3
The throw
Count the deep defenders before the snap. Three deep means the seams win; two deep means the middle does.
Why it works
It is arithmetic, not a matchup
Three deep defenders cannot cover four vertical routes. The one nobody accounted for is open before a single receiver has beaten anybody.
The count is done before the snap
Count the deep defenders. Three deep and a seam wins; two deep and the middle does. You know the answer before the ball moves, which is why this call survives a quarterback who cannot read coverage yet.
The inside routes bend, and that is the concept
Against one high safety the seams work away from him. Against two they attack the space between. Same call, different picture, and the receiver decides it rather than the play.
How it gets run badly
Letting the spacing collapse
Two receivers drifting into the same seam turns four verticals into three and hands the defense back the extra man it needed. The landmarks matter more than the speed.
Everybody sprinting flat out
Four receivers arriving at once lets the coverage sort them out together. The inside routes should get to depth and throttle, so the quarterback can throw them open rather than throw them a race.
Calling it on third and four
It is a shot, not a conversion. Every route clears past the sticks and nothing sits down in front of them, so an incompletion is the likeliest outcome on a down you needed.
