Deer hunter

Why it works

A football play is five seconds of stop-start effort followed by rest, and laps train neither the stops nor the starts. A tag game in a square gives every player dozens of short bursts and cuts, which is game conditioning, and the chase keeps them running hard without a coach counting.

Run it

10 MIN

Ten minutes, about five rounds with fresh hunters each time and a short walk between rounds. Stop before the last round turns into walking; it ends better with everyone wanting one more.

Say this

“Hunters, work together and trap them.”

Four hunters spreading out and pushing players toward each other is faster than four separate chases.

“Plant and cut, do not curve.”

A sharp cut is what beats a hunter, and it is the same change of direction a ball carrier needs.

“Caught players, jog the outside.”

Keeping the caught players moving keeps the conditioning going for everyone, not only the survivors.

Good looks like

  • Every player is moving hard for the whole round.
  • Hunters spread out instead of chasing in a pack.
  • Escapes come from sharp cuts, not long curves.
  • Rounds last under two minutes.

The mistakes

  • All four hunters chasing the same fast player. Give the hunters ten seconds before each round to pick a corner each.

Say: “Hunters, work together and trap them.”

  • Players running wide loops round the hunters until they tire. Shrink the square so they have to cut to survive.

Say: “Plant and cut, do not curve.”

  • Caught players standing on the line watching. Have them jog round the outside of the square until the round ends.

Say: “Caught players, jog the outside.”

Easier · 5 to 6

Use two hunters and a smaller square, and let caught players come back in after one lap round the outside so nobody sits out.

Harder · 11 to 12

Caught players become hunters, so the game finishes when the last player is caught, and every round ends at full sprint.
