7 on 7 tournament
Why it works
Taking the linemen out leaves only the decisions that win passing downs: where the quarterback looks, how the receiver beats leverage, and whether the defence passes routes off. Scoring by field position makes the short field the most valuable ground, which is exactly where most youth offences stall.
Run it
25 MINSixteen snaps a side, then swap. Stop at twenty five minutes even if the second side is short of snaps, and give the trailing team the last series from the 10. Do not add a clock; the point is decisions, not tempo.
Say this
“Know the call before you break the huddle.”
Scripted snaps only work if every receiver knows his depth and his landmark.
“Short field, short routes.”
From the 10 there is no room behind the defence, so the throw has to be in front of it.
“Pass him off, then find the next one.”
Zone defenders hand a crossing receiver to the next defender instead of chasing him across the field.
Good looks like
- The ball is out inside the four second count on most snaps.
- Receivers finish routes at the depth called, not wherever they stopped running.
- Defenders are in their zones at the snap and talk when a receiver crosses.
- From the 10 the offence throws in front of the defence, not over it.
The mistakes
Receivers jogging out still asking each other what the play is. Have the quarterback repeat the call and one route out loud before the break.
Say: “Know the call before you break the huddle.”
Running the same deep shot from the 10 that worked from the 40. Make the offence call one quick throw first from inside the 10 and watch the scores change.
Say: “Short field, short routes.”
Two defenders following one receiver and leaving a third alone in the end zone. Freeze the rep, point at the empty grass, and run it again.
Say: “Pass him off, then find the next one.”
Play five on five, take out the interception scoring and let the quarterback have six seconds. Start every series at the 25 so nobody spends ten minutes failing from the 40.
Add a two man rush from seven yards, cut the count to three seconds, and give the defence the call sheet only after the snap so disguise matters.
