Split the box

Fixes: They pass at willDefenseFlag and Tackle

Why it works

Zone falls apart at young ages because every defender follows a kid. Splitting the box in half with a visible cone line gives each defender a piece of ground to own, and the cross forces the one sentence zone depends on, the call that hands a receiver to a teammate.

Run it

8 MIN

Eight minutes, about six reps per pair before they rotate to receiver. Stop the rep the moment a defender leaves his half, and reset rather than letting it play out.

Say this

“Guard your half, not a kid.”

Zone is ground first. A defender who follows a receiver out of his half leaves it empty.

“Yours, take him!”

The handoff only works if both defenders know it happened, and the call is how they know.

“Eyes on the passer, then break.”

In zone the throw tells you where to go, not the receiver's route.

Good looks like

  • Each defender stays in his own half for the whole rep.
  • Every crossing receiver gets a call, loud enough for the coach to hear.
  • Defenders' eyes are on the passer until the ball is thrown.
  • The defender nearer the throw breaks on it first.

The mistakes

  • A defender chasing his receiver across the middle line. Stop the rep and stand him back in his half; the cone line is a wall for him.

Say: “Guard your half, not a kid.”

  • Two silent defenders, both covering the same receiver while the other one is open. Score the rep as a catch unless the call is heard.

    Say: “Yours, take him!”

  • Defenders staring at receivers and breaking late on the ball. Have the coach pump fake and only praise the defender who did not bite.

Say: “Eyes on the passer, then break.”

Easier · 5 to 6

One receiver, walking, and the coach holds the ball up high before throwing so the defenders have a visible cue. The call is the only skill being scored.

Harder · 10 to 11

Add a third receiver and a deep cone line so the square has a short and a deep zone, which turns it into a four zone call with two defenders sharing it.
