QB Draw
The draw with the quarterback keeping it himself: the line sells pass, the rush goes upfield, and the quarterback runs straight through the middle they left.
- The offense1 / 3
The look
The line pass-sets, the receivers run off the defenders behind them, and the back steps up as if to block. The quarterback shows pass, then tucks the ball and goes.
- vs Rush2 / 3
The conflict
The rushers chase the pass set upfield and the linebacker turns to cover. Nobody in the middle of the field is facing the quarterback, which is exactly where he runs.
- vs Rush3 / 3
The lane
It combines the draw's emptied middle with a runner the defense has usually stopped counting. Against coverage that has turned its back on the quarterback, it goes a long way.
Why it works
It uses a runner the defense forgot
On a passing down the quarterback is not in anybody's run assignment. He is an extra runner nobody was told to take.
Coverage turns its back
Defenders in pass coverage are looking at receivers. The quarterback runs behind their eyes.
It punishes the four-man rush
Every rusher who gets upfield is a gap left open behind him.
How it gets run badly
Leaving too early
The quarterback sells the pass for a real count. Tuck it too soon and the rush stops coming.
Calling it in a format that cannot run it
It needs a pass set and a quarterback who may run, and flag has neither. QB Keep is the version that travels.
Nobody picks up the free rusher
The back blocks whoever comes free. If he leaves early, the quarterback is sacked before the draw begins.
Who can run it
Tackle only. Flag has two problems with it, not one: it needs a pass set to sell, and it needs the quarterback to be a legal runner. The version that travels to every format letting the quarterback run is QB Keep, which has its own page.
