What is an empty formation in flag football and when do you use it?
Empty is an alignment with nobody in the backfield: every eligible receiver is split out and the quarterback stands alone. It puts the maximum number of receivers into routes and forces the defense to account for all of them at once. The cost is total: there is no run threat, no checkdown behind the line, and nobody to help if pressure comes. That is why empty is a situation call rather than a base formation.
Empty, against man. Everybody is covered and nobody is spare. Empty does not create an uncovered receiver against man; it creates a field with no help on it, for either side.
Why it works
Every eligible is already where he is going
No back has to release, no route starts late, and nothing about the play depends on somebody getting out of the backfield first. Empty is the fastest an offense can get five people into space.
It forces the defense to show you everything
With nothing to respect in the backfield, a defense has to declare how it is covering all of your receivers. There is no disguise left once every one of them has to be accounted for.
It is the clearest quick-game formation there is
Rhythm throws work when the receiver and the quarterback agree on timing. Empty removes every variable that makes timing uncertain, which is why it is where quick concepts live.
What to run from it

How to line up in empty

Split everyone out
Nobody stands behind the quarterback. If a player would have been a back, he is a receiver now, wherever that puts him.

Balance or overload, but decide
Two either side or three and two. Both are legitimate; what is not is drifting into one accidentally and not knowing which read is live.

Check your line requirement
Most rulebooks require a number of players on the line of scrimmage. Empty changes who satisfies that, so count before the snap rather than after the flag.

Have an answer for pressure
There is nobody to help. Every receiver needs a break inside about three seconds, or the formation has handed the defense a free rush.
What it gives you, format by format
5v5
Four receivers and a quarterback, which is every eligible player you have. It is the most receivers a 5v5 offense can field, and it removes the run threat completely, a trade that is worth it when you need yards and not when you need one.
NFL Flag
The centre is eligible, so empty here really is five men in routes once he releases. Defenses that assign somebody to watch the snapper are about to be a man short everywhere else.
7v7
The format where empty is closest to a base call. Enough receivers to stress every area of the field, and enough defenders that the coverage has to declare rather than just outnumber you.
11v11
Five eligibles split out and nobody to help the line. Empty tells the defense they can rush without worrying about a run, so it is a formation that buys receivers and sells time. That is why it lives on third down.
How the defense answers it
Rush, because there is nothing else to respect
An empty backfield means no run and no help. The quarterback has to get the ball out on time, and the fastest way to beat empty is to make on time impossible.
Match the numbers and play zone behind it
Empty spreads you out but it does not create anybody. Count the receivers, spread the defenders to match, and let the extra man play deep.
Take the quick game away
Empty usually lives on rhythm throws. Sitting on the short areas forces the quarterback to hold it, and empty is the one formation with nobody left to protect him when he does.
Blitz the vacated space
Nobody in the backfield means nobody is checking anyone. A defender coming from where a back would have been arrives unaccounted for.
When not to call it
In short yardage
Empty tells the defense there is no run. On third and one that is the single most useful thing you could have told them.
When the rush gets home
No back, no help, no checkdown. If your quarterback is already under pressure from a normal rush, empty makes every one of those problems worse at once.
With receivers who cannot get open on time
Empty is a timing formation. If the throw is late it is not a slow developing play, it is a sack or a bad decision, because there is nothing behind it.
